Statement of Senator JV Ejercito on the recent collision between Philippine Coast Guard and China Coast Guard vessels in the West Philippine Sea, resulting in “minor structural damage” to the Philippines’ ship
March 5, 2024
I am outraged by China's recent blatant aggression in the West Philippine Sea. Sobra na talaga ang Tsina sa panghihimasok sa ating teritoryo.
Chinese vessels' recent reckless maneuvers and blocking tactics at Ayungin Shoal are clear signs of desperate attempt to unlawfully seize Philippine territory. Hence, China's delusion that the West Philippine Sea belongs to them must be put to an end.
The Philippines firmly upholds the peaceful resolution of disputes through adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, China's actions often deviate from these principles.
I commend our Philippine Coast Guard for their professionalism and bravery in the face of danger.
I am calling once more on the national government to expedite the modernization of our armed forces—to strengthen our defense posture, protect our maritime interests, and ensure the safety of our people.
