JV Ejercito bats for stronger cybercrime units to counter scammers
August 07, 2023
Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito on Monday
said the cybercrime units of the Department of Information and Communications
Technology (DICT) and Philippine National Police (PNP) should be strengthened
to address the growing threat of scammers.
This came after his son Emilio lost P120,000
to scammers around two weeks ago who were able to gain access to his personal
information and one-time password
“Kailangang palakasin ang cybercrime units ng
DICT at PNP. Kasi ang kawawa dito ay yung mga senior citizen at mga kasambahay
natin. Ito yung mga tinatarget ng mga scammer na ito,” he said in an interview.
The lawmaker from San Juan said he was
recently informed by Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan
John Enrile Uy that the national government would need to procure additional
equipment and recruit more information technology (IT) experts to effectively
combat these scams and other forms of cybercrimes.
He said he will support any move that will
enhance the anti-cybercrime operations of the pertinent national government
agencies and law enforcers.
“Ang kulang talaga nila is yung mga equipment at
paghire sa mga IT experts. Ang daming ahensya ang humihingi ng intelligence
fund ngayon pero kung para ito sa pagpapalakas ng anti-cybercrime (response),
dahil napakarami sa’tin ang nabibiktima nito and this is a new enemy ng ating
mga kababayan, I’m willing na suportahan ito,” he said.
