Senate approves Carmona’s cityhood bid
February 02, 2023
The Senate has approved on third and final
reading a bill that seeks to convert the town of Carmona in Cavite into a city.
Having secured 19 affirmative votes for House
Bill No. 3968 or the Charter of the City of Carmona, Senator Joseph Victor “JV”
Ejercito, the bill’s principal sponsor in the Senate and chair of the Upper
Chamber’s local government panel, thanked his colleagues for passing the
measure.
“As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on
Local Government, I would like to express my gratitude for the support of this
august chamber for the approval of the Charter of the City of Carmona, on third
and final reading,” he said.
Carmona’s proposed city charter was originally
authored by Cavite 5th District Rep. Roy Loyola.
Once signed into law, the town of Carmona will
be the first municipality to be converted into a city under Republic Act No.
11683, which amended the Local Government Code of 1991 and made it easier for
towns to apply for cityhood.
“Carmona has all the characteristics of a city
but does not enjoy such privilege despite being one of the most prosperous
municipalities in the entire country. This bill embodies the hard work, dreams,
and aspirations of the people of Carmona,” Ejercito said.
“The passage of the bill will pave the way for
more opportunities for its people and more investments for its local
government,” he added.
