Statement on the motion to archive VP Duterte impeachment case
August 06, 2025
While it is true that the Senate has the sole power to try and decide all impeachment cases, our Supreme Court is the sole interpreter of laws in our system of government.
The Legislature crafts the laws; the Executive implements them; and the Judiciary interprets. That is our system of government—it is how it has been and how it should be, unless we amend the Constitution.
I believe it is important to uphold the principle of checks and balances among the branches of government to maintain legal order and avoid a constitutional crisis.
We may or may not agree with the ruling of the Supreme Court but it is our duty as a co-equal body to abide by it.
